"Safe
from the Storm (and from the fuel bills): Concrete Homes"
In
2002, 14.4% of the single-family homes built in the U.S
utilized exterior above-grade concrete wall systems, such
as concrete masonry, insulating concrete forms, precast
panels and cast-in-place forms - accounting for more than
150,000 homes in that year alone. The market share of
concrete homes has steadily increased, from 3% in 1993
to more than 14% in 2002. Homes built with exterior concrete
walls offer superior energy efficiency, increased safety
from natural disasters, and a quiet, comfortable and healthy
indoor environment. Homes built with exterior concrete
walls can accept any type of exterior finish including
brick, stone, siding or stucco. A finished concrete home
is indistinguishable from any other home in the neighborhood.
As builders and consumers become more aware that concrete
walls are an option for their new home, entire communities
built with exterior concrete walls are being built in
areas as diverse as Minneapolis, Myrtle Beach, Reno, Palm
Springs, Houston and Kansas City. The energy savings and
a smaller insurance premium often make the monthly operating
cost of living in a concrete home less than that of a
conventionally built house. Concrete offers a natural
choice for homeowners concerned about the environment.
Concrete products are made with a combination of recycled
products and some of the most abundant materials on earth.
Once in place, concrete is there for the long run. It
doesn't rot, rust, or burn, lasting decades with minimal
upkeep.

Landscaping
with Hardscaping
--
Dave Sonka
Today’s
residential landscapes are more than just planting arrangements
and retaining walls to resolve troublesome slopes. “Hardscaping”
(landscaping with natural stone, earthen or concrete products)
has become a way to add visual interest and enjoyable
outdoor living spaces. Hardscapes create structure in
the landscape, make reference to the architecture of the
home, and make planting arrangements and resolved slopes
far more interesting and enjoyable. Attend this seminar
and bring your ideas and questions and David will take
the time to give you straight answers to your questions
and offer ideas for your projects.
Landscaping
for our
Minnesota Weather
-- Jack Dorcey
The
only constant with Minnesota weather is change. From record
rainfalls to droughts, heat waves to ice storms, our weather
keeps us on our toes. How do we deal with these extremes
in the outdoor business of landscaping? Through technology
and experience, we can outsmart the elements to install
water features, hardscapes and plants that stand the test
of time. Bring your blue prints or ideas and make your
landscaping a reality when you ask the questions and spend
the time to sit down with Jack after the seminar to discuss
ideas and options for turning an average lawn into a dream
lawn.

Dave
Sonka and Jack Dorcey
David
has had a passion for drawing and creating art since early
childhood. This passion has led him through college and
the landscaping industry to become one of the Twin Cities’
premier landscape designers. His design skills, coupled
with his extensive technical and horticultural knowledge
and experience, makes David a valuable asset to a highly
professional team of designers. Since 1994, David has
created several hundreds of landscapes and over two hundred
landscape projects ranging in scale from a few thousand
to over a million dollars. David prides himself in artfully
tailoring and personalizing the design to the wants, needs,
and styles of each client, and sincerely enjoys meeting
new people and new families along the way.
Jack
was raised on a dairy farm in Nebraska. His interest in
horticulture originated through 4-H. By Junior High, while
preparing fields for planting, Jack decided that he was
to become a landscape designer. At sixteen, Jack started
working for the local nursery and landscaping company.
He began working at the bottom of the crews but soon was
leading his own crew and doing part time design work.
While in college, Jack worked in the horticultural section
for the Lincoln Parks Department. He then spent 4 years
working as a full-time designer for a landscaping firm
in Lincoln, NE. Teaming up with Bever Landscaping has
now expanded the potential for what a Jack Dorcey landscape
can be. Jack has a great ability to create spaces that
make a yard into part of your home. Clients love his fun
and laid back approach to the experience of landscaping.
